Thanks for the comments Craig. I understand your points fully. This blog has always been about the fun experience of learning to fly fish properly more than it has been about showing off. I think my excitement about fly fishing comes across sometimes as boastful, but my family, friends and I are very humble with appreciation for the places fly fishing is fortunate to take you, the experience w/ family/friends that is had, and the fish you sometimes land. In the excitement I can get carried away w/ the picture taking and photo posting forgetting what's right for the fish and the power of the Internet. I don't ever expect too many folks to actually tune into this site or leave helpful comments but I appreciate positive-constructive comments like this as it will only make me and anybody else better at fishing. I'll work on respecting the aspect of catch/release more for the fish and always feel free to leave comments.

nice story and some nice fish, unfortunately as anyone with a passing knowledge of fish know that you simply cannot handle fish and keep them out of water that long and expect a very high success rate of recovery. Granted the fish may swim away and look fine, however the chance for delayed mortality is fairly substantial after handling a fish that much, even on a tailwater like the Mo. As much fun as it is to take pics for memories and show off on a blog, the best option for the fish is quick removal of the hook and a quick pic snapped in the net near the water surface. Unless of course you were planning on eating some of those fish (which I do on occasion) so don't get me wrong I DO in fact kill a fish on a rare occasion to eat, it's just that if catch and release is what you're going after better care should be taken to ensure the chances of survival. PS if that is a guide in some of the pictures HE should definitely know better...... thanks for allowing me time on the soap box. tight lines

...and I missed the whole scene!! We were fishing together to start the day but a fun area opened upstream that we enjoy fishing (plus this area produce like mad last time). Before somebody else jumped in up there I told Wes, "I'm going to go reserve our place at the dance." Little did I know that Wes was on a collision course with a 23" trophy rainbow.

Well I was upstream landing my fair share of LMF dinks, thinking Wes should have come up too b/c there were a ton of fish. After about a hour or so, I saw Wes coming up to join me.

"P...I got something to show you on my camera!" I figured it was a big fish but I never thought it was that HUGE and COLORFUL. When he showed me that first picture on his camera, I laughed out loud and maybe dropped a "holy s!" I couldn't believe it but was excited and proud for ol' Wes.

After flipping through the pictures, I'm pretty sure we exchanged a silly high-five or ridiculuos fist bump and went back to fly fishing.

The rest of the trip I was like a proud papa bragging about the fish Wes landed to everyone I crossed paths with...other anglers on the river and folks at the fly shop. Wes keeps his feet grounded when it comes to boasting about fish, but I made him whip out his camera and show off that fish to everyone...In my opinion he deserved to.

I've officially retired from the blog and passed the reins to Parker, but perhaps I can make an exception. Here's the story:

It was snowing, windy, and I was a little hungover. A front had just moved in and the fishing at Evening Hole was slow, but not terrible. A few anglers left a good run above me and I let it settle for while I landed a small one.

I made a long upstream cast, got a normal take, and at first, thought it was just a decent fish. I actually almost had her to hand before she knew what was going on. The trouble started when she saw me. We locked eyes and before I knew it she took 70 ft of line and threatened to get into my backing.

I couldn't even turn her head with the 6X between us, so I sprinted downstream after her, apologizing to two fellow anglers as I ran right through their runs. The only reply I received was "No problem. That is one big f*cking fish." One of them offered a net, and, because I'm an idiot, I declined.

After about 10 minutes, I finally got her head above the surface, but I couldn't get my hand around her. After the third try, I had to resort to the 'arm scoop,' and clamped her to my chest.

After catching my breath and performing a slightly awkward fist-pump, one of the anglers that watched the entire battle was kind enough to take a few pics. She (the fish) measured a clean 23 inches and was full of eggs. When I released, she hung out next to me to recover for awhile, and then was on her way.

All in all, it was a nice little Saturday.
